Head Coach – Lehigh University (1995-08)
NCAAs: 2003 National Coach-of-Year (NCAA 4th, 3rd in ’03-04), the 3rd time for LU with back-to-back Top 4 teams; the 3rd-place tied Lehigh’s best finish in 75 yrs; his 2000 team was Lehigh’s first Top 10 team in 13 years – and the first of six in seven seasons. That led the East from 2000-08 (Cornell, 4; Penn St, 2; Edinboro, 1; Penn, 1). Lehigh placed ahead of Iowa St from 2003-06, a school record. He coached two NCAA champions, Rob Rohn (’02) & Troy Letters (’04).
His wrestlers earned 30 A/A medals from 1997-2006, with 12 of them earned by non-state champions. The five A/As in 2004 (with Jon Trenge trying out for the Olympics) ranks 2nd all-time at Lehigh (six in 1980)—the only EIWA school since 1957 to have five or more.
EIWA Success: won 5 straight team titles (best in the league since ‘35); holds all-time EIWA title winning pct (6/13 for 46%); he was a 3x EIWA Coach of the Year; Lehigh is the only league school with two coaches earning National Coach-of-Yr honors (Thad Turner the other in 1979).
Dual Meets: his three wins over Top Four teams in one season (2004-05) matched the school’s total for the prior 40 seasons and that team helped draw an all-time LU record 5,828 for #2 Lehigh vs. #1 Oklahoma State, the only dual sell-out in Stabler history.
